Pink & Green Nursery

I realize that I've never shared photos of our older daughter's nursery.  As you can see - for my first baby girl - I went uber-feminine!

Dressers are from AP Industries; rug is from PB Kids; lampshade is from PB Kids and lamp base is from IKEA; I made the diaper stacker and heart decorations; My incredibly talented mom made the adorable quilt.

Quilt detail.

Love the details!  My mom is now a professional quilter - but this was one of her first!

Curtains are from PBKids; I made the valances and ribbon tie-backs.
I think it was the HOURS that I spent hand-sewing the diaper-stacker that inspired my mom to buy me a sewing machine... good call!

I painted/decorated letters from Michaels in different designs to spell out our daughter's name.

I only have a few presentable photos from this configuration of the room.  Things have changed and now both girls sleep in this room, and the aqua/orange room is a dressing/play room for them - but neither room feels finished enough (for blog-viewing) at the moment.  I have a few projects in mind though... and will try to get to them soon!

I've linked up our aqua/orange nursery and my pink nursery design plan over at Shelli's blog, a la mode today - go check out all the wonderful inspiration!!  Shelli's nursery is one of my all-time favorites!  She also posted beautiful ones here and here.

Design plan: A Pink Nursery

A while back, I posted some fabric ideas for my friend's daughter's nursery.  We've had several discussions since then, and have moved away from a brown print for the curtains - so, I went back to my favorite online fabric sources to scout out pink prints.  Starting with the foundation of the existing light pink walls, off-white carpet, cute crib bedding (shown in the top right corner of each plan below), and white sofa and chair, I identified some fabrics, art and accessories, and put together a few design concepts.

Curtain fabric is Annie Selke Scramble; brown chevron pillow fabric is Premier Prints; pink and white flower pillow fabric is Premier Prints; house pillow is Land of Nod; brown pillow with pink applique is PBTeen; white bookcase is PBKids; alphabet print is by Frilly chili (etsy); elephant print is by trendypeas  (etsy).  I added a mock white valance with pink trim and pink throw blanket on the sofa.

Suzani curtain and pillow fabric is Premier Prints; pink and white pillow on chair is Annie Selke Links; table lamp is Restoration Hardware Baby & Child's Hayden lamp (and is on big sale); pink moroccan pouf is from Overstock.

Curtain and pillow fabric is Marimekko Keisarinna; brown dots pillow fabric is DwellStudio; face "pillow pal" is Land of Nod; green pouf is from Overstock; pendant lamp is RH Baby & Child's Adler Pendant.
Which is your favorite?

Swatches: A client's nursery

I am very excited to be helping my friend (ahem, client) work on a few projects in her beautiful home.

First up is her darling daughter's nursery.  The room is spacious with lots of natural light.  She has the furniture, bedding and freshly painted walls, but is looking to add all the finishing touches (window treatments, wall decor, accent pillows/throws, etc).  Here are a few photos:

This is the cute crib bedding.

The goal is to warm up the space and add some personality to the large expanse of pink wall.  To ground the space and provide a balance to all the light shades in the room (pale pink walls, light wood furniture, beige carpet, white sofa and chair), I suggested we go dark and bold on the window treatment - pulling from the chocolate brown in the bedding and accessories.  Since the windows are already fitted with sleek and practical blackout shades, we don't have to worry too much about functionality, so we both agreed that curtains with a valance would be perfect for the window in the photo above, and a matching valance for the window nook on the other side of the room (not pictured).  Now, it's a question of narrowing down the options!

Couldn't find a better image of this colorway to show the pattern repeat - but see below in "sand dollar"

If you look back up at the nursery bedding - I think this print coordinates really well with the whimsical leaves of the sheet pattern.

Premier Prints Zig Zag in Brown/Natural

Once we settle on a curtain fabric, we'll make at least one throw pillow for the sofa in that fabric, and find one or two other fabrics to work with it.  In my hunt for brown prints, I came across these two pink patterns that I loved - and think would work great with the existing bedding/accessories.

If we don't use the brown colorway - I would love to bring this in.

Premier Prints Twirly in Candy Pink

Some other ideas for the room:
  • chair rail with either solid color below or wide vertical tone-on-tone stripes below (bringing in a slightly darker shade of pink);
  • fabric-covered memo board above the changing table;
  • a colorful alphabet print (etsy has many lovely options);
  • mirror and dress-up corner.
I look forward to posting more as the project progresses!

Before & After: Our Aqua and Orange Nursery

My second baby girl is turning two pretty soon and I think two years might exceed the statute of limitations for sharing before-and-after nursery photos - so, here goes.

This photo shows the room as the previous owners had it (purple was a theme throughout the house):

This shows the room as it existed for the first year and half that we lived here (sad, I know):

We had always planned to turn this room into a second child's room, so we painted it a neutral color and just threw some furniture in there.  This was our tv/guest room before we finished the basement.

The nursery was really a labor of love.  I worked on it for several months - staying up late every night sewing the window shades, bedskirt, pillows, changing pad covers, boppy covers, diaper caddy liner, ottoman (pouf), and bunting (flag decorations), making the memo board, framed butterfly art, painting the bookcase, and surfing the web for the finishing touches.  As much as I tried to work with the neutral off-white backdrop, I just knew I wouldn't be happy with it... so, my husband was kind enough to humor a pregnant lady and paint the room a pretty aqua color.  I'm so glad he did!

After:

At the time I did this room, I hadn't seen many (or perhaps any) nurseries done in this color scheme - but, it seems to be a popular color combo these days - and I always enjoy seeing how other people have worked with these great colors.  Some lovely examples:

One of my close friends also decorated her little girl's room with orange and aqua - I can't wait to see it (and blog about it)!
